Attract the Right Job or Clientele: 3 Sales Tips to Balance Relaxation with Reality
Given the opportunity to be away for a vacation provides each of us with many types of decisions to be made for the fun ahead. A recent nostalgic visit to the Jersey Shore provided a reality check on several levels.
Six of us gathered to reminisce the fond memories the men have of working together as teens on the Ocean City boardwalk.

Aside from the good time we had, there were choices to be made each day. Maturity combined with humor became major factors for our decision-making processes.
- Calculated Risk for Gambling
All sales professionals and entrepreneurs agree that calculated risk is a requirement to experience success.
One friend told his wife to always bet multiple lines at a time on the slot machine in order to increase the odds in her favor. Hearing the news, we three women immediately headed for the penny slots. Calculated risk taking led us to agreeing that we each invest an entire dollar!
The outcome:
Our friend put in one dollar. Following her husband’s advice, the initial investment was 10 cents in order to play 10 lines at one time.
The 10 cent investment earned $25!
Gambling Balance
We all quit while our friend was ahead. Myself and our other friend each lost $1.00 and were happy to walk away. Our winning friend treated us to lunch.
- Regional Cuisine
Prospecting to keep your pipeline full is also an essential business task. On vacation we sometimes need to prospect for better food options.
Originating from Northern California where organic grass-fed beef and farm to table food is all the rage, I had to smile upon viewing some of the menu offerings such as:
- Salted Carmel Pancakes
- A sandwich comprised of fried pork, potatoes, gravy, and cheese all placed on top of a doughnut.
-
Cuisine Balance
In my younger day one of these dishes may have been tempting, but I no longer wish to fight weight loss after a big gain.
The Outcome:
Mission accomplished by selecting healthier options allowing for eating well without being followed by the misery.
- Sales Skills and Yelp to the Rescue
To be successful in business, one always has to strive for a meeting of the minds also known as willing to negotiate. One friend made a reservation at a Very Pricey restaurant.
Negotiation
My suggestion was to “keep options open to select the best”. Thankfully, our children showed us to visit Yelp in these situations. We were taught to seek out 4 Star 2 $$ restaurants. Experience has shown these to be excellent in quality and price.
There are always two sides to every story. The one couple was not happy we asked they cancel the reservation upon our selecting a new option for dinner.
The Outcome:
Our four friends gave huge thanks for a wonderful meal at a fraction of the cost and at a beautifully appointed restaurant. Most importantly, all relationships remained in tact.
The thanks were passed on to our children. Thankfully all is well that ends well. In terms of our friendship, I’m now free to continue to provide suggestions.
