In a recent article about who manages billions of dollars, Dr. Susan Mangiero, CFA describes the importance of carefully investigating what service provider to hire and then monitoring that advisory firm on a regular basis. In an interview with Plan Sponsor Magazine, Dr. Mangiero predicts that lawsuits between companies that offer employee benefit plans and their vendors will likely rise due to regulatory scrutiny and headlines relating to the retirement crisis. As an Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst, a Professional Plan Consultant and certified Financial Risk Manager, she frequently serves as an economic expert and forensic economist when disagreements head to court. In "Fiduciary Outsourcing Options" (February 2015 issue), Dr. Mangiero suggests that employers should ask a potential service provider about the quality of its team, the strength of its compliance efforts, its experience in managing employee benefit plans and whether the service provider has been sued before. She adds that "Searching for an outside fiduciary 'is an exercise in risk management' ...A sponsor should consider many factors..." Given President Obama's recent push for reform of the retirement industry and who serves as a fiduciary to millions of individuals, knowing who helps companies manage billions of dollars - and the oversight applied to them - is important indeed.
