May 28, 2015, Los Angeles, CA -   A soon to be released study of 2014 individual long term care insurance buyers will reveal that the vast majority selected a longer deductible, reports  the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance.

"Individuals are now looking at long term care insurance as a way to obtain quality care faster and to augment some of the costs that they will pay on their own," explains Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (AALTCI).  "Selecting a longer deductible period is a smart way to plan and undoubtedly that's why most people include one when purchasing coverage."

The Association regularly analyzes data on buyers.  The latest data will be included in the organization's 2015 Long-Term Care Sourcebook.  The 28-page compendium of research and industry data will be distributed in July.

"Most of us have a deductible associated with our car insurance, our home owners coverage and even our health insurance, so it's to be expected that the same will be true for those buying long-term care insurance," Slome notes.  "In addition, some policies may have a deductible or waiting period for care in a skilled nursing home but may not have a deductible for home care."

Slome explained that about a dozen leading insurers currently offer long term care insurance policies.  "There are important differences between the policies in terms of costs, acceptable health conditions and available discounts," the long term care insurance expert explained.  "We advocate a 'Good, Better, Best' approach to buying long term care insurance and all of them include a 90- to 100-day deductible."
