Many popular wearable devices track sleep data, as do smartphone apps and in-bed devices. Consumers can use the data collected by their sleep tech devices to improve sleep behavior and to get a better picture of their overall health.

CEA and the National Sleep Foundation’s (NSF) Consumer Awareness and Perceptions of Sleep Technology study reveals how consumers are sleeping, how they feel about sleep tech, when they will buy it and how they use it.

Users of sleep technology tend to be:

  • Younger: Gen Xers and Millennials make up the biggest segments of sleep tech users, with 71 percent of sleep tech users overall under 45 years old.
  • Health conscious: Almost three-quarters (70 percent) of sleep tech users say they actively manage their mental health and two-thirds (68percent) of sleep tech users say they think that  at least 75 percent of their meals are healthy meals.
  • Active: Six in 10 (62 percent) wearables users say they get enough exercise each week
Yet, 42 percent of other sleep tech users say they are currently managing a chronic illness compared to only 25 percent of wearables-only users.

Though only half (52 percent) of online adults report they get enough sleep, just one in five (22 percent) online  adults own or use some type of sleep-related device when they tuck themselves in at night. Furthermore, almost one-third (29 percent) say they are not at all aware of sleep technology. Although two-thirds of sleep tech users (68 percent) say they are aware of sleep technology, a portion of that group say they do not feel fully familiar with it.

Sleep technology has solid potential in the consumer technology industry.
Over half (51 percent) of current users say they sleep better knowing that their technology is helping them while 49 percent agree that they feel healthier because of their sleep technology.
