We?ve seen it coming for some time now. It?s been predicted in
research, it?s been reflected in
company decisions and trends and now it?s been recognized with award show
accolades. The television programming revolution is upon us.
As announced a couple weeks ago, the 2014 Emmy nominations recognized the expected popular shows with very few surprises, but it also gave the streaming service
Netflix an established ? and well-deserved ? seat at the table. Last year, Netflix released its first
original series,
House of Cards, which earned three Primetime Emmy Awards. This year they came back with a vengeance and a host of new shows to rack up their honors.
The streaming service gathered a total of
31 nominations, and did so against some stiff competition. Although regular television programming is still the king, the changes in how
consumers access their favorite TV shows, not to mention society?s obsession with ?binge-watching,? have bolstered the popularity of online streaming.
Although Web content shows were not successful in all aspects (Hulu and Amazon did not receive any nominations for their original shows), don?t write them off just yet. Netflix is the clear
powerhouse behind streaming shows, but based on their growth over the past year, we wouldn?t be surprised if other services start making appearances in award shows to come.
