LOS ANGELES, CA, January 27, 2016 - The typical 65-year-old will pay between $55 and $66 per-month for short-term care insurance protection that covers care at home, in an assisted living community, a killed nursing home or hospice.

"An increasing number of seniors are considering a 1-year plan of coverage for the risk of needing long-term care," shares Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, a national insurance trade group.    "Policies that pay benefits for a maximum of 360 days are typically referred to as short-term care insurance or recovery care and they offer an affordable and very viable option today."

According to the National Advisory Center for Short Term Care Information which assessed 2016 policy costs, about half of all long-term care insurance claims last one year or less.  "Having more coverage is always going to be better but cost and meeting health qualifications can be an issue for many seniors, making short term care insurance a great option."

The STC Advisory Center director noted that a 65 year old would pay roughly $55-monthly for some $36,000 in potential benefits with a 30-day Elimination Period (EP) (deductible).  "Frankly, for a nominal added cost, you can have a 0-day deductible so that your benefits begin sooner," Slome adds.  The cost for the same plan without the 30-day EP would be $61-per-month.

Costs for someone age 70 would range from $80-to-$91 monthly, Slome notes.  Most short term care insurance policies can be purchased at ages that are older than traditional long term care insurance.  "A 75 year old would pay $130-to$150 per month," Slome cites.  "And, men and women pay the same."

Short term care insurance policy sales are growing according to Slome.  "More agents are contacting us asking how they can offer these policies to their clients, especially those who are declined for long term care insurance," Slome concludes.  "We expect 2016 to be a year of growth."
