Prevent Drunk Driving

On Wednesday of this week, a Texas jury acquitted a father accused of murdering the drunk driver who killed his two sons. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/08/27/texas-dad-acquitted-drunken-driver-killing/14695409/

This is good news for the American justice system.  Despite the claim by Brazarias County DA Jeri Yenne that David Barajas is responsible for the murder of vehicle driver Jose Banda, a jury of David Barajas? peers found him not guilty. According to the article, Barajas? defense attorney argued that the killing of Banda was unrelated to the accident. The defense pointed to an improbable timeline, the lack of gunshot residue on Barajas, the fact that no firearm was recovered, and the prosecution?s witnesses testifying that more than one shot had been heard as proof of Barajas? innocence.

However, this isn?t a total victory. Let?s face it, with testimony discounting the version of events that the prosecution described and the near total lack of evidence supporting the prosecution?s case, why did this even go to trial? I?m not going to second-guess the police, but?wow. At least he wasn?t convicted.

But let?s be honest. This is a tragedy all around. A 20-year-old man lost his life after taking the lives of two young boys. Why because of poor decision making on the deceased Mr. Banda?s part.

Look folks, the automobile isn?t a new thing. Neither is the problem with drinking and driving.  STOP doing it! It is 2014 and families are still being harmed because someone thinks it is a good idea to drive drunk. It isn?t. Something else to think about: a drunken person can?t really be reasoned with. Perhaps the sober people around a potential drunk driver need to take action to prevent tragedies like this.

This weekend is Labor Day weekend. Miles will be driven and alcohol consumed, but please stop mixing the two.  Please.
