Protests by 99%

US News Article on Return to Middle Ages Based on Trump's View: "We're Living in Medieval Times" and Book on "The New Middle Ages"

After Donald Trump stated that "We're living in Medieval times" in a CNN State of the Union program, U.S. News and World Report interviewed sociologist Gini Graham Scott Ph.D. about her book on "The New Middle Ages"   As Scott describes in this book, the economic inequality we see today compares to life in Europe hundreds of years ago, and she draws parallels between the top 1% of earners today and the aristocracies of medieval times.

Most notably, as she discusses in her U.S. News and World Report interview, everything from the Fight for the $15 Wage and the Occupy Movement to the rise of non-career politicians running for president and the formation of the Islamic State group are movements rooted in unresolved inequality, much like the peasant protests of the Middle Ages.

She was inspired to write the book after watching a series on TV that dealt with the Tudors and monarchies of medieval times and seeing how the lifestyles of the very wealthy and the miserable conditions of the peasants was much like the contrast between the lifestyles of the superrich and 99% today.  Now as then, everything is different for the superrich and poor from recreation and entertainment to day to day life.  Even the battles between the nobles and kings for more and more territory can be compared to the struggles in the software industry and smonh the high-tech start-ups for dominance in their field. And the media of today is like the medieval church in the way it throws its support to different parties as they struggle for power.

In Scott's view, the insights from this book suggest that the rebellions of today will gather more and more force as people out of power fight to get power and redress what they see as major injustices due to inequality.  As she discussed in her interview, if history repeats itself, you will see these patterns where the rebellions and the wealthy start to consolidate their power until a new order emerges from these struggles.

Reflecting Trump's comments, the book's comparison with medieval times presents a new light on the modern crisis and shows the need to inspire action to reduce inequality before it undermines the social order.
