Back to School Safety Checklist

School may be back in session, but it’s never too late to read up on back to school safety.

Whether your children walk, ride their bicycle, or take the bus, it is of the utmost importance that they take proper precautionary measures to stay safe. Here are some tips on how you can decrease the chances of disaster when your child(ren) make their way to school.

Transportation Safety

Taking the bus:

  • Make sure that your children stand at least six feet away from the curb.
  • The bus driver should always be able to see you. If you need to cross the street to board the bus, make sure that you always have sight of the bus driver.

Riding their bike to school:

  • Make sure that your child is wearing their helmet when they leave the house. Helmets protect the still-developing cranium and brain of your child. A nasty fall could have a lifelong consequence.
  • Make sure that helmet is fitted and secured properly, and meets the safety standards (usually marked by a sticker or label).
  • Teach your child the rules of the road: Always ride with traffic on the right side of the road, and coming to a complete stop before crossing a busy street. It’s safest to walk your bike across.

Walking to school:

  • Always walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk available, walk facing traffic.
  • Be sure to check both sides of the street before crossing. Double-check just to be sure.
  • Practice walking to school with your child, so you know the route in case anything goes wrong. Practice crossing the street to increase their safety.
