I’ve always enjoyed interacting and debating with bright people. I consider these opportunities visits to the “mental gym.”
When I’ve met new people I’ve understood pretty rapidly what kind of intellect I’m encountering. My criteria are:
- Well read and well traveled, can talk about a wide variety of topics.
- Large vocabulary, including the use of metaphors, examples, and social proof to validate points.
- A well-developed sense of humor, which indicates perspective to me along with the ability to laugh at oneself.
Very often I’m asked, “How can you write so many books?” While there are cogent answers to the question, I’m weary of the question, so I respond, “I focus on volume and not accuracy.”
About a quarter of the people to whom I say this then ask,”Then who checks your work for accuracy?” And that’s no laughing matter….
