The 2016 Emmys were full of laughs and television-defining moments. What we found most notable about this year’s ceremony was the attention paid to social causes by nominees and winners. In this week’s News of Note, we share our favorite clips from the ceremony that show us how celebrities and commercials can use television’s largest stage to inspire and fight for meaningful social change.
Alan Yang humorously approaches a very serious topic in his acceptance speech—diversity. By putting Asian-American representation in the media in perspective using statistics, Yang brings the lack of Asian representation in Hollywood into sharp focus. (Vox)

In his powerful acceptance speech, Jeffery Tambor encouraged Hollywood executives to give transgender talent increased chances for acting roles. His willingness to call his own award into question sends an important message that sometimes social change means examining your own actions. (ABC News)
In case you missed it, the Ad Council took home the first Emmy for a PSA EVER with Love Has No Labels’ win for the Outstanding Commercial at the 2016 Creative Arts Emmys. By rewarding the film’s message of diversity and inclusion with one of the most coveted awards in advertising, the Emmys sent a powerful message that above all, love is love.
