The website PostOfficeOpen.com has been updated for 2017, answering the simple question: Is the post office open today?
"Visit PostOfficeOpen.com anytime to see whether the U.S. Post Office is open today, and whether it's open tomorrow,'" said Kevin Savetz, the site's creator. "The site is as simple as it is useful. I hope to save people from wasted trips to the post office, late bills, business missteps, and other side effects of not knowing postal holidays."
Newly available at the site is the ability to instantly download a free printout of the postal holidays and closure dates in PDF form.
For example, in 2017, the post office will be closed on Monday, May 29, for Memorial Day. It's also closed on Monday, Oct. 9 for Columbus Day. Depending on the day of the week on which a federal holiday falls, the post office may by closed that day or the day following. PostOfficeOpen.com sorts it all out.
"It might seem obvious, but when a holiday falls on a weekend, or different entities honor occasions on different dates (such as President's Day), it's not always immediately clear how that affects mail delivery," Savetz explained.
PostOfficeOpen.com immediately answers the yes-or-no answer in bold green or red text.
Basically, the U.S. Post Office closes all its branches on or very near federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday, Washington's Birthday (President's Day), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Occasional exceptions to the yes/no answer are rural post offices that keep unusual hours, and post offices that close on Saturdays. (Most post offices close on Sundays and federal holidays only.)
