A new website, PostOfficeOpen.com, answers just one question, 365 times a year: Is the
post office open today?
"Well, technically, PostOfficeOpen.com, answers two questions: 'Is the post office open today?' and, 'Is the post office open tomorrow?'" said Kevin Savetz, the site's creator. "I wanted the site to be useful, yet simple."
Savetz launched the site after wondering one too many times if he should make a special trip to his town's branch of the U.S. Postal Service, or if it would be a wasted trip due to a holiday closure.
For example, in the next few months of 2010, the post office will be closed on Memorial Day, May 31, as well as July 5, the Monday after Independence Day.
"Maybe it seems obvious, but how many times have you hesitated, not sure if the post office is open on a day such as Christmas Eve or Dec. 31? (It is.)," Savetz said. "And people may expect the post office to be closed on President's Day, but since schools, local governments and banks may honor Washington and Lincoln on different days, which is it for the USPS?"
PostOfficeOpen.com immediately offers a yes-or-no answer in bold green or red text, helping business owners and individuals avoid the annoying, or even profit-threatening, consequences of not being able to mail a letter or package when expected.
Basically, the U.S. Post Office closes all its branches on federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday, Washington's Birthday (President's Day), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day (Sept. 6 this year), Columbus Day (Oct. 11), Veterans Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 25) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25).
PostOfficeOpen.com makes it easy to quickly check and see if the post office is, indeed, open. The only exception is very rural post offices that may keep unusual hours, and post offices that routinely close on Saturdays. (Most post offices only close on Sundays and federal holidays.)
PostOfficeOpen.com is another convenient site from the creator of FaxZero.com and the more than 60 sites in the FreePrintable.net family of free
