The classics never go out of a style, a point proven by AtariMagazines.com, a website that provides texts from old, hard-to-find and out-of-print
computer magazines. The site is now celebrating its 16th year on the web.
Created as a hobby site by Kevin Savetz on July 27th, 1996, Classic Computer Magazine Archive was initially dubbed the "Digital Antic Project" and offered a mere two issues from
Antic magazine.
Since that time the site has gone through one renaming and immense growth, now sporting over 10,000 articles on 8-bit Atari computers, '80s gaming platforms and personal computing. Full text articles from
STart magazine between 1986 and 1991 are available, as well as issues from
Creative Computing Magazine between 1974 and 1985. Users can easily navigate the site to find old and rare material from Compute!, Hi-Res, Antic Amiga Plus, Whiz Kids, II Computing and more.
"A great deal of the interest in this links back to nostalgia," Savetz said. "Computing technology changes so rapidly now. It's wonderful to be able to look back at the original models and to see what other people have collected as well."
The images and texts are all fully searchable, and are scanned and uploaded by volunteers and fellow enthusiasts. All material is used with full permission from various publishers. "It's become a project that many people have gotten involved in," Savetz remarked. "I'm gratified by the level of interest in the site."
Even after 16 years, the sites is still periodically updated and improved, making it a bountiful source for collectors and classic gamers. New additions to the
computer magazines collection are always welcome.
