5 reasons why great companies (still) fail.  By Adam Armbruster

Great companies fail for the following reasons, although there are certainly combinations of these reasons included as well:

  1. Company leadership thinks that they can dictate the consumer experience. "We want to educate you on why our product is better."
  2. They stop thinking about "new" customers and rely on repeat business. "Our fans love us." is a common death bell phrase.
  3. They think they are in a completely different business. Yellow Pages still think that they are a book publisher. (They could have been Google.) Tesla almost went bankrupt thinking that they were a "car" company. (They are actually a luxury fashion brand.)
  4. They think the Internet won't disrupt them. Radio Shack, FAO Schwarz both thought that they were all about the store experience. (They were, except that they didn't charge for it, and all the stuff they sold was on Amazon.com much cheaper.)
  5. They simply don't tell enough about people what they are actually selling. Toyota brand Scion just admitted that; "Maybe our underground marketing was a bit too underground."
