A killer whale has reportedly caused the death of a trainer at Sea World of Orlando as reported by numerous news outlets.
"Sea World is an extraordinary organization which has the very highest safety standards and protocols. My condolences go out to the trainer's family as well as the entire Sea World family," said conservationist Dan Stockdale. "Those of us who work with animals realize the risk we take as we pursue our passion of education and conservation. Individuals who dedicate their lives to wildlife education make it possible for all of us to increase our understanding of our world and the environment. The trainer is a conservation hero. "
Killer whales live in pods that vary in size from a few animals up to dozens. They are carnivores which can grow 20 to 30 feet or more in length and can weigh more than 12,000 pounds. The cover vast ranges and can live fifty to eighty years.
