AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, is named one of America's safest companies in the just published November issue of EHS Today, a nationwide magazine dedicated to health, safety and the environment. Only eight companies made this year's list of America's safest.

Not only is the lost-time injury rate of AMEC's Earth and Environmental division eight times lower than the industry average for engineering firms, the company takes its safety message beyond the workplace.

"Our judges were particularly impressed with the company's comprehensive program, which takes safety out of the workplace and into homes, the community and employees' families," said Sandy Smith, executive editor of EHS Today. "AMEC's Earth and Environmental division is engaged in safety at all levels: from the daily safety message from the senior vice president, to employees taking 5,700 safety quizzes and testing personal protective equipment, to including safety in the bidding process for jobs."

Only eight companies were named to EHS Today's 2009 list of the safest businesses in the United States. The others are the Concrete Pipe Division of Cemex, Medtronic Inc., Morin Actuator, RQ Construction Inc., Trendmaker Homes, Trihydro Corp. and Wood Group. "For these companies, having an injury-free year is expected, going beyond OSHA compliance is a given, and devoting resource to environmental management and employee health and wellness is part of doing business," remarked Smith.

AMEC's Earth and Environmental division also received a pair of awards in October from the National Safety Council. One was for logging five million employee hours without a lost-time injury over a 17-month period in the United States and the other was for four million hours without a lost-time injury in its global operations over a period of more than seven months.

AMEC, which in 2005 became one of the first companies in the world to ban cell phone use while operating motor vehicles, has now received six National Safety Council awards in the past three years.
