Fastest way to kill a cockroach? Buy him a cup of coffee!
Natural indoor and outdoor pest control secrets
with Andy Lopez, The Invisible Gardener
Cockroaches may be able to survive 10-times the lethal radiation dose for humans, but it seems that just a single sip of black coffee will turn out their lights faster than a heal stomp from the circus fat lady.
'Caffeine is highly lethal for many insect pests that invade our homes and gardens," says organic gardening expert and author Andy Lopez, known to his radio show fans and blog followers as The Invisible Gardner. (www.DontPanicGrowOrganic.com) Andy says he routinely takes care of roaches and a variety of other bugs by spraying them with a few ounces of a special cold pressed coffee mixed with water. It's the high caffeine content that immediately knocks the critters on their backside, he says.
Andy goes to work each day toting a variety of repellants for driving off six-and-eight-legged invaders like vinegar, flour, garlic cloves, and Tabasco sauce, making him look more like a Cajun chef than one of the world's most respected organic gardening consultants. Lopez says liquid peppermint soap (Dr. Bronners) is one of his favorite insect repellants. "The soap, which should be sprayed on plants and vegetables in the ratio of one tablespoon soap per gallon of water, is toxic to insects and ants," says Lopez. "It scrambles their senses and drives them away."
Other amazing quick all-natural solutions for insect attacks include:
Mosquitos: Put crushed garlic cloves in your shoes and mosquitos won't bite you.
Fleas, ticks, and flies will also stay away if you spray garlic in your yard and on plants.
Ants: Sprinkle the area with diatomaceous earth (often referred to as "DE"), an off white talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. If an ant (or any insect with an exoskeleton) gets DE on them, the DE works under the shell and punctures the body, which then dehydrates and the insect dies. DE is totally non-toxic.
Lopez explains his resolve to use only natural, non-toxic compounds for pest control both in the garden and in the home:
"With each passing year there is a growing concern that synthetic pesticides are linked to some cancers and illnesses," says Lopez. "A Denver-based study, for instance, published in the American Journal of Public Health, found that children whose yards were treated with herbicides and insecticides had four times the risk of a certain cancer: soft-tissue sarcoma. Fetuses exposed to home pest strips during the final three months of pregnancy had three times the normal rate of leukemia, and children exposed to them after birth ran twice the normal risk rate of leukemia."
Lopez says the secret to successful organic pest control is not only knowing which non-toxic items to use, but knowing how and when to use them. Each of the time-tested organic pest control techniques which Lopez uses in his Malibu organic gardening business is explained in detail in his books, videos, and radio programs – all of which are archived and can be accessed online after registering to become a member of his organic gardening club: "ClubIG".
