In this workshop, Dr. Michael Levittan provides the basics of trauma, its impact, and then he attempts to illuminate the road to healing. The presentation is conveyed on both informational and experiential levels. Hopefully, by the conclusion we will have learned something useful, exercised the thinking and feeling parts of our being, and gained a bit more hope to help and to heal.

2)UCLA EXTENSION ONE-DAY WORKSHOP
Saturday, July 11 / 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
* THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN TRAUMA AND ADDICTION:
Perspectives of Psychology, Neurobiology, Evolution, and Consciousness
Trauma and addiction are ubiquitous and often devastating phenomena in our complex, modern world. This workshop examines the interaction between trauma and addiction from perspectives of psychology, neurobiology, evolution, and involvement of consciousness. An in-depth understanding of trauma and PTSD is provided, including subjective and objective dynamics, as well as the cyclicality of symptoms. Various theories of addiction are presented, including the medical, criminal justice, evolutionary, personality trait, impulsivity, psychodynamic, temporal discounting, and disease models. We will explore an integration of trauma and addiction, with emphasis on neurobiological functions to bring about a deeper understanding of each. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to make assessments of the traumatic and addictive symptoms presented to them and indicators of dangerousness, as well as discuss deeper meanings of clinical material.
