The tension built and built until they went behind their tent and beat the hell out of each other. After the fight was over, what emerged were men whose lives depended on each other. A few months later, while, on a patrol, their unit ran into an ambush. A hand grande grenade was thrown into their midst by the enemy, and Milton L. Olive III jumped on the grenade and blew himself up, saving the lives of four squad members. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, becoming the first African-American in the Vietnam War to receive the award. | | | | | | This one-day event is the 50th anniversary reunion of the weapons squad, 3rd platoon, Company B, 2/503 Inf, 173rd Airborne Brigade Sep. and all Vietnam veterans and their surviving spouses.
