The First African American Awarded the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War
and all Vietnam Veterans
| | | | | | | | In 1965, 50 years ago the 173rd Airborne Brigade were the first Army ground combat troops deployed to Vietnam. 58,000+ men and women lost their lives. Upon returning to the US Vietnam veterans were not welcomed home or respected.
On October 22, 2015, we are joining together to celebrate the courageous life of Milton Lee Olive III, all Vietnam Veterans and their surviving spouses,in Chicago, IL 10am - 1 pm at: | | | | | | | | One day in mid-1965, a white teenager from the South and a black teenager from the North ended up in a tent together in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade without a counselor. The tension built and built until they went behind their tent and beat the hell out of each other. After the fight was over, what emerged were men whose lives depended on each other. A few months later, while, on a patrol, their unit ran into an ambush. A hand grande grenade was thrown into their midst by the enemy, and Milton L. Olive III jumped on the grenade and blew himself up, saving the lives of four squad members. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, becoming the first African-American in the Vietnam War to receive the award.
| | | | | | | | |  This one-day event is the 50th anniversary reunion of the weapons squad, 3rd platoon, Company B, 2/503 Inf, 173rd Airborne Brigade Sep. and all Vietnam veterans and their surviving spouses.

This summer, Team/children is raising $75,000 to launch a groundbreaking early childhood development program and expand its teen program where teenaged volunteers will learn how to refurbish computers and run a nonprofit organization.
