Stuart McArthur's Universal Corrective Map

Stuart McArthur (age 12 - living in Australia) drew an early version of his map in 6th grade and passed it in to his teacher, and the teacher said: "Stuart, redo this right or you're not going to pass." And Stuart didn't understand why it was that he couldn't have Australia on the top of the map.

Watch this 2-minute clip and see the story behind the map that eventually sold over 350,000 copies - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYuV4eOVz38

Not bad for a kid who was told to do things a different way.

Putting Australia at the top half of a map, as was done on McArthur's Universal Corrective Map, may seem like the work of some prankster in the Outback, but in fact, there is no intrinsic reason to put the Southern Hemisphere at the bottom. Nor is there a universal mandate that requires the "Prime Meridian" to pass through Greenwich, England. Instead, these are choices based on mapmakers' objectives and biases. Like other choices in mapping, they show how individuals in a particular time and place perceived their world. Buy the map HERE.
