After years of declining requests to videotape her keynote presentations, veteran comedian and keynote speaker Jan McInnis is now opening the door—carefully. Known for her hilarious take on work and life, McInnis has entertained and inspired audiences nationwide with her signature keynote, Finding the Funny in Change. Until now, however, she rarely permitted taping, citing years of disappointing experiences.

"Too many things went wrong," McInnis explains. "I'd either never receive the promised footage, or the quality would be unusable—shaky cell phone videos, poor sound, or weird angles that just didn't represent my work well. And once a bad video gets out into the public, it's not a good look for anyone."

But the rise of virtual events and Zoom presentations has shifted her perspective. "Zoom changed the game. I had to allow recording for virtual keynotes, and I realized it could actually work—if done correctly."

To ensure both she and her clients benefit, McInnis has established a set of straightforward, professional requirements for videotaping her performances:

• Delivery: She must receive an editable MP4 version within two weeks of the event.
• Usage: She retains the right to use the footage for her marketing.
• Access: The video may only be posted on the client's password-protected internal site, not publicly, and must not be downloadable.
• Time Limit: It must be taken down from the client's website within 60 days.
• Audio Quality: McInnis must be mic'd directly into the camera for crisp, clear sound.
• Audience Sound: A mic must also be placed on the audience to capture laughter and questions.

"These are all very doable things, and when they're done right, everyone wins," she says. "The client gets a fantastic recording of a memorable keynote, and I have a high-quality piece that reflects my work accurately. And if it ever does end up out in the wild, at least it looks and sounds great!"
