As an entrepreneur, small business owner, or even executive, how can you shore up against the onslaught of uncertainty and outright panic among your prospects? What is happening in the economy today? This is a question we hear repeatedly and will continue to hear today and beyond. You likely share similar conversations.
However, even in the most horrific economic times, people will still be willing to buy. The issue then becomes, how do you rise to the top and be the apparent go-to in your industry? Why Authority Power & Why Now
Authority power is more than being a thought leader. This is claiming an area of genius and being known as a reliable and results-driven expert. Your future clients aren’t looking for generic guidance. They need specific answers to how they solve problems that prevent growth or, worse yet, unwillingly drive them to close their shop.
Our world has shifted, and prospects are weary of so-called “experts” who use words like “must” and “should.” They also understand that they must do something, but choosing the right expert today is exhausting!
Even if you have not spent any time establishing your authority, the best day to start is today. Many small businesses are panicking, throwing out everything they have learned and practiced over the last few years. By doing so, they are regressing to transactional interactions. And that is something that will not break through the economic chaos.
Embrace the Specifics
Wise words suggest that how you start is how you will go. What do you want to become well-known for in your first interactions with future clients? This is more than just clarity. This is putting a line in the sand for your area of genius. If you could only offer one program for the rest of your career, which one lights you up? What is one problem that you solve with this signature offering so entirely that you don’t have just clients, you have advocates?
Coffee Chats
I recently did a virtual coffee chat with a new contact. I gave her some quick tips for modifying her blog content to make her more searchable by AI as an authority.
My brand is about being relentlessly helpful. This woman was so blown away during that thirty-minute discussion that she immediately went on LinkedIn and wrote a recommendation for my services!
Two Conversation Essentials
In a single conversation, I applied two critical elements: embodying my brand and being clear on my area of genius. With this understanding, I could immediately connect my brand and area of expertise.
When on a call with a future client, do you stay squarely in your lane or try pivoting to what you think that individual wants? Get to the specifics of your area of genius and stay there. If you are consistent with your offering, they will understand quickly what you offer.
Identify One Unique Qualifier
When I work with clients, they oftentimes focus on the “er” in the services. They say they are cheaper, faster, and better. Most of your competitors can say the same thing.
Within your process, there is one thing that you do that transforms the engagement and solves the problem in a disruptive way. I always recommend documenting every step of your process and sharing that process detail with an expert-adjacent (someone who would refer clients to you and is also an expert in the industry).
I worked with a client who completed his transformational step in a single sentence. For him, it was a no-brainer step. For his clients, that one step upended how they looked at the problem and how he helped them solve it.
You are very close to your process, and some steps seem trivial. I argue that there is a nugget of pure gold in that step. Finding that nugget will take an outside perspective. You will move beyond the “er” conversation and go to true transformation by identifying that one thing.
Allow People (And AI) To See You
Showing up in your community is the best way to become visible. Don’t expect your audience to remember who you are. Being top of mind means consistently showing up and reminding your community of who you serve and what problems you solve.
This includes your knowledge-sharing. You can provide this in any format that is comfortable for you and is sustainable. Don’t say you will post a newsletter every week if you hate writing. Share your area of genius in the most natural fashion for you and has the lowest barrier to keeping it going. Commit to sharing every week.
The Bonuses of Sharing Knowledge
One bonus strategy is to share your expertise: Get visibility in other experts’ communities by being a podcast guest. That content lives forever, shows your area of genius in action, and is a way to interact with new communities that are target-rich environments.
We want different avenues for visibility for two reasons: future clients get to interact with your content, and AI gets to find it as well! AI is the next barrier that needs to be broken to establish authority. It is becoming one of the fastest-growing ways prospects will search for and find you and your services.
By discovering and sharing your area of genius, you are providing that beacon of light for your right-fit clients. Investing in your authority power will make others identify you as the no-brainer choice to get them to a future state of success.
