Understanding the importance of meeting dynamics is critical to motivating and inspiring attendees and improving meetings for desired results. Not heeding what is currently in place will only drag down the camaraderie and motivation for better performance.

My Story

Experience is the best teacher; therefore, it is wise to consider the following factors for improving team meetings in a way that increases motivation, participation, and the desire to put in the best work possible for the benefit of all:

  • An inclusive environment
  • Tasteful Humor
  • Relatable experiences

Inclusive Roundtable Environment

Every company meeting, networking event, and personal communication must be inclusive. It’s the only way to broaden our scope, motivate and inspire everyone to do their best, and teach us how to improve.

The Start of Each Meeting:

  1. Have each person attending the meeting provide a one-minute or less tasteful humorous joke or recent work-related experience. For example, while enjoying a time-out and coffee with two friends today, one a table with a wooden top. I replied, ‘Great, we can have a board meeting!’ Laughter followed.
  2. For a couple of minutes, play popular music to enjoy, which inspires a fruitful conversation.

The two tips help to alleviate stress and then concentrate on the issues at hand for more insightful contributions. 

Why would management take the time to begin each meeting this way? It relaxes the group and encourages everyone to participate, contributing to a better team effort. Next, people become motivated and inspired to share concerns and suggestions and provoke thought on varying ways to conduct and contribute to business growth.

Prospect and Client Meetings

The personal touch is a step above strict business communications. Clients also want to relax a bit and are willing to do so when respect is an added ingredient. They relax to listen to you and then share their thoughts. The conversation becomes far more insightful and can ultimately be lucrative with extra business.

Relatable Experiences

Addressing an issue is often more relatable when sharing past experiences to make a point that captures attention and inspires action. Some employees often feel they are alone in experiencing less-than-desirable outcomes. Sharing experiences with team members makes communication more personal and insightful and can motivate collaborative efforts.

After enduring horrific treatment in the corporate sales environment, I felt it my duty to share how I spoke up to the bullies. The suggestion to write a book for credibility as an entrepreneur could not be overlooked. Moreover, I wanted to lend a helping hand to anyone enduring the same to let them know they aren’t alone. Sharing relatable experiences can inspire action and empower others to speak up, make a difference, and further their careers.

As a community service project, I wrote Nice Girls DO Get the Sale: Relationship Building That Gets Results, which I dubbed a ‘Corporate Tell-All with Names Changed to Protect the Guilty!’ In the book, I describe the horrific corporate treatment and how I spoke up as the lone female. Dealing with bullies while growing up has guided me in asserting and protecting myself while speaking up.

It was a daring project to reveal my angst in the corporate arena. But my concerns soon disappeared as many could relate to them and wrote to tell me so. The insights proved so helpful that the book received much credible publicity, quickly becoming an international bestseller and evergreen among the classics.

Your Story: Improve Meetings for Desired Results

Consider your good and bad experiences over the weekend and how you wish meetings could improve. As an employee, encourage collective support for changing how meetings are conducted so everyone can voice their insights. Offer ideas for future team events and conversations. As the Doobie Brothers once sang, ‘Listen to the Music’ to inspire new ideas.

No matter the role, by modeling your preferences, you are likely to connect with and inspire people to perform similarly. The bonus is that without realizing it, you step into a leadership position by inspiring and motivating others to adopt similar approaches to work. The next step is to encourage those in your reach to do similar work advocating leadership on a higher plane.

An inclusive mindset and willingness to share our better strategies launch one into a leadership position and produce desired results. As your resolve strengthens, it may be time to create a new business based on your desired model and encourage others to do similar work. Collectively and individually, mountains become yours to climb and enjoy the success ahead!
