Throughout American history, United States military personnel have been deployed during the holiday season, often facing dangerous and challenging environments. While many of us are busy shopping, wrapping presents, and preparing to celebrate with loved ones, our military is on duty, often far from home, ensuring our nation’s safety.
As of June 2024, the United States has approximately 170,000 active-duty military personnel stationed in over 150 countries worldwide, with the largest contingents in Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East.
10 Ways You Can Thank a Soldier
- Organizations like Operation Gratitude allow civilians to write letters, sponsor care packages, and send virtual messages of support to deployed troops and first responders.
- The USO continues to be a reliable source of comfort, providing care packages and virtual connection options to the troops. The organization reported that over 1 million packages with unique holiday themes were sent out in 2024.
- The Veterans Crisis Line and the DoD’s new mental health programs aim to provide 24/7 support for active-duty soldiers and veterans dealing with isolation or depression during deployments.
- Programs like the Fisher House Foundation offer accommodations for families visiting hospitalized service members.
- A handwritten letter is a powerful gesture of gratitude. Services like A Million Thanks connect civilians with soldiers by collecting letters of appreciation. These letters are distributed to troops worldwide, providing them with personal messages of support and encouragement.
- After service, many veterans struggle with physical, emotional, and financial issues. Donating to or volunteering with organizations like the Wounded Warrior Project can make a real difference. Many programs offer direct assistance for healthcare, housing, and employment, helping veterans transition smoothly to civilian life.
- Programs like Soldiers’ Angels allow you to sponsor holiday meals for deployed soldiers or provide gift cards for military families to purchase holiday meal supplies. It’s a way to bring a bit of home to soldiers far from family and friends.
- Local organizations often host welcome-home or send-off events for deployed troops. Attending these events or sponsoring refreshments, gifts, or decorations can be a great way to show support for soldiers in your community.
- Many veterans and military spouses face employment challenges. We actively hire military personnel and have been recognized by ESGR for doing so.
- Displaying an American flag at your home or business during the holiday season is a simple yet meaningful gesture to honor and show respect for the service of all military personnel.
This holiday season, a small act of kindness, like a message, donation, or thoughtful gift, can bring much-needed cheer and appreciation to soldiers and their families.
As we gather with loved ones this holiday season, remember and honor those who sacrifice their time, safety, and comfort to protect our way of life. To our brave service members deployed this holiday season, thank you for your service, and may you find peace and joy wherever you are.
