Attract the Right Job or Clientele:

Improve Your Verbiage for Better Business Results

Our words can almost predict our outcomes, and for business, it is wise to pay strict attention to what we say. Communication in every way will either benefit or harm the outcomes we desire. Like any other task or strategy, practice is vital, and revision often becomes essential to showcase our best work. Our blog story covers two incidents while on vacation, conveying why improving your verbiage is critical for better business results.

Improve Verbiage for Better Business Results

Accurate communication is vital for personal and business efforts. Otherwise, misunderstandings will arise, and people will walk away. For business, it can be devastating to lose clients due to an incorrect selection of words.

My Story

A remarkable coincidence occurred while on vacation: One woman shared a story about her misspeaking, and another made a statement that had me gasping!

First Story

While on vacation abroad, Mary states that she was walking down the stairs of an elegant hotel with her camera in hand. Suddenly, looking up, she noticed the Prime Minister about to also walk down the staircase.

Mary looked up to the government official and said, ‘Please stand still for a minute, as I can get an excellent shot!’

You can guess that she was immediately surrounded by security guards and almost handcuffed. In today’s environment, she might have been killed. Mary explained that she was referring to taking a picture of the Prime Minister. They accepted the explanation and apologized for the upset. In the end, all was good. She now knows to select her verbiage carefully.

Second Story

Cheryl could not be with us on vacation due to contracting a bad episode of COVID. We were all hopeful that she would join us for the last few days. I gasped when I heard her husband say,

‘Sadly, she isn’t going to make it!’

Thankfully, he clarified the meaning, not that she would no longer be among the living, but that she needed more time to heal before getting on an airplane.

Better Storytelling

The adage, ‘practice makes perfect,’ comes to mind, although rarely is something perfect. On the other hand, every technique and every strategy requires practice until it becomes seamless and appears naturally.

Done well, storytelling about good and poor experiences draws the attention of others up front, followed by compassion, and encourages building relationships between those involved. Moreover, prospective clients enjoy the surprise experience of our sharing by showing empathy to realize the motivation to share their related experiences. Almost magically, a connection is made and continues to grow as more meetings follow with new business.

Your Story

All endeavors require us to choose our words wisely to prevent misunderstandings. Think back to previous times when another mistook what you said. It could have led to an argument or an incorrect approach to something new. For business, that’s the last thing anyone needs. It’s always best to ask questions upfront to ensure understanding.

The worst result is to state something after which people walk away believing integrity is non-existent. Before ending any conversation, it’s always best to ask again, ‘Do you have any questions?’ followed by, ‘How would you like to proceed?’

The bonus in hearing everyone out and using precaution typically encompasses extra business or solid friendships.
