Seniors turning age 65 in Massachusetts have special decisions to make according to the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance (AAMSI).

"Massachusetts is one of a few states with special rules and plan options for seniors," explains Jesse Slome, director of the Association.  "Supplement 1 Plan is no longer available to people who are new to Medicare.   Individuals can buy Supplement 1A Plan but rates there can vary from one insurer to another."

Medicare Supplement 1A plan covers basic benefits including Part A: inpatient hospital deductible as well as skilled nursing facility coinsurance.  It also includes foreign travel emergency coverage as well as state-mandated benefits including yearly Pap tests and mammograms.

"In Boston a woman turning 65 could pay as little as $211 monthly or as much as $259 for basically identical coverage," shares Jesse Slome, director of the Association.  "Massachuseets couples need to be aware that fees added to the monthly cost may also vary.  So do discounts for two-person households.  In Massachusetts, they vary from zero to as high as five percent."

The Association's 2020 Medicare Supplement Price Index reports both the lowest and highest insurance rates.  "The survey is intended to educate more consumers about the importance of comparing options," Slome adds.  "You might be making a decision that you cannot easily change down the road."
