Our world has morphed into one where the need for speed has overtaken much of our lives. So many activities are rushed and sometimes it feels like we’ll in a whirlwind.
Unfortunately, one of the casualties of this pace is taking time to think. Thinking has been all but dropped from our rosters and has been replaced by cramming as much as we can in the shortest period.
We lose when this happens.
Sometimes we just need to downshift just enough to “chew on it.” The irony is that this doesn’t necessarily require tons of time. You can slow down for as little as a minute for some decisions.
One moment of mindfulness can have great results.
Masterful multitaskers will discover that they can accomplish more by pausing for a few moments of reflection rather than rushing head first into a decision. Some of the benefits include:
+ Better decision-making;
+ Reduced stress;
+ Better focus;
+ Fewer accidents;
+ More confidence; and
+ Achieving higher quality results.
With all of this said, speed is still important. It is the antidote for dawdling or procrastination. It is necessary to stay ahead of your competition.
It’s counterintuitive, but speed can be enhanced by inserting those mindful moments to reflect. When you do this, you may actually speed up. Give it a try and see how your productivity improves.
“The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
