On October 7th, University of Wisconsin-Madison student organizers of the Conflict Free Campus Initiative (
CFCI) will have a massive demonstration featuring NFL star
Aaron Rodgers, Hollywood actress
Emmanuelle Chriqui, and rapper
Omekongo Dibinga to raise awareness about the war in Congo and America's connection to it. CFCI draws on the power of student leadership and activism to bring about peace in Congo. By encouraging university officials and stakeholders, both of whom are large purchasers of electronics and powerful spokespersons, to commit to measures that pressure electronics companies to responsibly invest in Congo's minerals sector, students are voicing the demand for conflict-free products from Congo.
This will be an event like no other, bringing together the music, sports, and acting worlds. Says Omekongo of this event: "I am honored to be a participant of this event. The students of the University of Wisconsin have sacrificed great time and energy for a cause to help strangers in a foreign land who are connected to us through our most familiar devices—our electronics products. I am glad that it is the students who are leading the movement because they indeed are the future."
To date, there are over 150 campuses that have a CFCI chapter. Many of these schools have been successful in convincing school leadership to sign resolutions aimed at ending the use of materials that come from Congo that end up in the electronics products utilized on college campuses. The event will take place at Memorial Union Terrace Stage. CFCI is a project of the Raise Hope for Congo Campaign and STAND. For more information, visit
