New FAA Policy Statement on OSHA Standards for Aircraft Cabin Crewmembers

JANUARY 01, 2013 BY LAWRENCE JUMAN PARRIS

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be proposing a new policy statement regarding the regulation of some occupational safety and health conditions affecting cabin crewmembers on aircraft by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The new statement on policy should enhance occupational safety and health in the aircraft cabin by establishing the extent as to which OSHA requirements may apply to the working conditions of the aircraft cabin crew while they are onboard the aircraft in operation.

The FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 require the FAA to initiate development of a policy statement to set forth the circumstances in which the requirements of OHSA may be applied to the cabin crew.  It will also change the extent of the FAA's jurisdiction over cabin crewmembers.

The proposed policy statement is available for review at http://www.regulations.gov and the FAA invites interested persons to participate by submitting written comments, data, or views on the policy statement.  Send comments identified by docket number FAA-2012-0953.
