COVID-19 resulted in and all schools going virtual in March 2020 and created unprecedented times for educators and students. Educators, parents and students all experienced high levels of stress. Resuming school and attending to the safety and social and emotional wellness of all of our students will be a challenge. Every student has a story to tell about their experience being quarantined at home. Many students will have anxiety about returning to schools and self-care strategies for students are very important. Additionally all students missed out on many important school activities that were scheduled for the spring of 2020.
This session by a former national school crisis team leader will focus on helping school staff with their anxiety about school resuming. The presentation will then outline how to conduct classroom discussions and implement developmentally appropriate steps to restore a sense of safety and security for students as they reenter their schools for the fall semester of 2020. The keys to resiliency and protective factors for students will be emphasized and how to help students develop a self-care plan to deal with their stress and anxiety.
Join internationally known school psychology expert, Dr. Scott Poland, who is a Professor at the College of Psychology and the Director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, for this timely conversation on how to prepare for the social and emotional challenges students and staff will bring when they return to school. Scott is a licensed psychologist with 26 years of full time experience in schools and an internationally recognized expert on school crisis. He has authored or co-authored five books and many chapters and articles on related subjects.
The session will be hosted and moderated by Kenneth S. Trump, the President of National School Safety and Security Services, a Cleveland-based national firm specializing in school security, emergency preparedness, litigation consulting, and related safety consulting and training. He has more than 30 years working with PreK-12 school and public safety officials from all 50 states and internationally. Ken is a third-year doctoral student at Johns Hopkins University where his research focuses on superintendent and principal communications with parents about school safety in highly ambiguous and uncertain times. He earned MPA and BA in Social Service (Criminal Justice concentration) degrees from Cleveland State University. He is the author, co-author, and/or editor of three books, five book chapters, and more than 450 articles. He is one of the most widely quoted school safety experts and is a four-time invited Congressional expert witness.
