Orthopedic Community Calls For Increased Use of Nutritional Supplements During Peri-Operative Period: Rise In Vitamin D Deficien

Dr. Erik Westerlund, M.D. board-certified orthopaedic and fellowship-trained spinal surgeon and founder of Top Doctors Labs, an advanced nutritional supplement firm with a focus on surgery recovery and overall bone and joint health, joined an international faculty sharing expertise across a broad range of topics in spinal surgery at the recent AOSpine Advanced Concepts in the Management of Spinal Disorders conference held April 28 – May 1, 2011 in San Diego, Calif.

Discussion on the growing number of bone fractures and the support for targeted supplementation for joint health was mirrored amongst attendees as a critical measure for patients undergoing bone and joint surgery and those at risk for osteoporosis-related spinal fractures. Recent research proves that more than 50 percent of patients have insufficient or deficient levels of calcium and vitamin D, which serve as the building blocks for a healthy skeletal system. The lack of appropriate levels of calcium and vitamin D represents a direct correlation to an increase in spine, hip and other fractures; and potential hindrance of healing after surgery. Several recent studies in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and other key bone and joint scientific journals support these findings which have been widely discussed at this year's top academic conferences including the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) which was also held in San Diego this past February.

"The orthopedic and neurosurgical spine community has expressed its growing concern over vitamin deficiency among patients and its effect on patient well-being and surgical outcomes. Presentations at recent academic conferences have called for a greater reliance on nutritional supplementation to support optimized healing and to help prevent complications after bone and joint surgeries. Top Doctors Labs provides a best answer to clinical-quality, and a pharmaceutically-pure formulation with the essential nutrients needed to support bone health that minimize the potential for unexpected reaction with anesthesia and other drug therapies."

Dr. Westerlund has been an early leader among the growing number of bone and joint specialists calling on the orthopedic and general medical community to address these concerns by educating patients on the use of nutritional supplements both prior to and post surgery to help improve outcomes and minimize healing complications. In addition to surgical support, ideally formulated supplements can also be used to support osteoporosis prevention and other degenerative bone disorders and fractures at any adult age. Men have a surprisingly high 20 percent lifetime risk of bone fracture from osteoporosis. Women risk an epidemic-level 50 percent chance of a bone fracture in their lifetime, which is higher than the risk of MI, stroke and breast cancer occurrence, combined.

Dr. Westerlund describes osteoporosis and the potential for debilitating fractures as the, silent epidemic for all Americans over 50 years old. "This cruel epidemic of osteoporosis fractures while not deadly, will still lead to progressive debilitation and increasing pain." Fortunately, simple steps can be taken to help people 50 and over target their risk now. These basic steps include balanced, high-grade sources of calcium, vitamin D, and other key micronutrients as integrated in the Top Doctors Labs formulations. These same steps are even more effective when started in your 20's or younger, when peak bone mass is reached.

Top Doctors Labs uses pharmaceutical-grade production to manufacture natural, non-pharmaceutical compounds to support a lifetime of strong, healthy bones and joints. Traditionally, physicians were resistant to non-drug therapies. However, Top Doctors Labs targeted approach provides dynamic, natural nutritional supplement formulations using proven science to address specific needs, demands and circumstances that have been developed to serve as 'building blocks' that can be mixed, and matched and optimally organized to permit truly integrated and individualized solutions.
