Occasionally, we experience miscommunication, generally due to misunderstandings. Clarity in our communications is critical for all efforts. However, realizing and admitting where we erred can help us move forward steadier. Better yet, an apology typically helps to repave the road forward. Sales Skills 101 Improve Communications: ‘Observe, Listen, Clarify.’

  • Listen to every critical word stated and confirm your understanding upfront.
  • Listen for innuendo to clarify and extract the precise meaning.
  • Repeat specific words that have a double meaning for further clarification.
  • Listen for contradictions to ensure everything is above board – or not.
  • Strive to find a collaborative effort whereby everyone feels they have earned a win.
  • Summarize the conversation at the conclusion and write a follow-up message with the takeaway points for further agreement.
  • If you receive a follow-up message that contradicts the previous conversation, respond immediately with a question in a professional tone; and wait for a response before proceeding.

Recognize Misstatements without Emotion

Occasionally, we connect with those who appear to have much in common with our experiences. We typically have more extended conversations than usual, filled with enjoyment and laughter. Accordingly, business ideas and invitations to join a community arise, along with details of how all parties can make it work effectively.

When a potential business venture involves a new partnership, it is critical to consider the specifics of the new arrangement. A follow-up message I received had me responding immediately because it did not match our initial verbal agreement. One excellent sales technique is to copy some of the person’s verbiage to emphasize clarifying misstatements. I did that in a message but have not yet received a reply. Despite the captivating conversation the day before, it’s likely time to move on to avoid wasting time. Build Trusting Relationships

A collaborative effort far outweighs a singular effort regarding connections, new possibilities, and desirable outcomes. Sharing the work of others typically encourages others to do the same for you. Reciprocity contributes heavily to building trusting relationships and more significant followings on social platforms. But occasionally, we may say or do something that isn’t fully appreciated.

For example, I added what I believed to be a helpful addition to someone’s post for readers to consider, but it was seen from an unwelcoming perspective – that of being competitive rather than collaborative, which was not my intention. After explaining my thinking to maintain the professional relationship, I added that I would respect the decision of whether or not to keep or delete my commentary. 

Effective Selling

Traditional sales refer to finalizing each sale as ‘the Close.’ However, as one sale closes, I view the end as ‘The Opening.’ Why? Professionalism at every turn, asking the necessary questions and reaching an agreement, can and will open many doors for future business; hence, ‘The Smooth Sale’—earning a returning and referring clientele.

New Doors of Possibilities

Be alert to the possibilities to see where your expertise can be a good fit. Carve out time for appointments to learn more about the company goals and obstacles to achieving them and to know how you may potentially assist. Timing is everything: the willingness to stretch oneself to learn more and build a fulfilling repertoire. Last, it’s a waste of time to beat oneself up over lost business, as new doors of opportunity will seemingly appear out of nowhere.

Avoiding tough conversations is useless and can backfire. When an uncomfortable topic arises, toughen up to ask the more critical questions to find a path forward together.
