Stop, Look and Listen -- Three Keys to Improving Performance

Stop, Look and Listen: Three Keys to Improving Performance

We all learned as kids to "Stop, Look and Listen" before crossing the railroad tracks.  Before crossing today's "railroad tracks", let's ask ourselves, "What steps am I taking to improve performance today?"

Consider these:

1. Stop - Ask Yourself:  Have you written down your Top 3 Action Steps for today?  To help you, ask yourself these questions:
  • To support my personal reputation, what is the most important action I can take today?
  • To support my professional reputation, what is the most important action I can take today?
  • To support the reputation of the organization in which I work, what is the most important action I can take today?
Ask ourselves what the most important actions are we can take today to support our personal reputation, professional reputation and the reputation of the organization in which we work.

2. Look - Ask Others: To help you, ask others, "What steps can we take today to:
  • Help achieve team goals?"
  • Help achieve organization goals?"
  • Help achieve individual goals?"
Let's look and ask, so we can collaborate to put others first.  Involve others in the "we", "us" and "others" conversations that help us achieve mutually-desirable goals.  Helping others achieve mutually-desirable goals is also a great way to "take care of ourselves".

3. Listen - To Ourselves and to Others: Listen to yourself; what is your "self-talk" telling you about who you are and what you are striving to accomplish today?  Who else is "showing up" in your life and your work today?  What are they saying?  What are they doing? (actions they are taking)

It's not easy to be accountable; however, it is very important to be accountable because, at the end of the day, we have to be able to answer to ourselves and to others, including our "Higher Power".

4 . "How may I help you?"  "How are we helping others?"

The author of this newsletter can't ask the first question enough times today, so please send him an e-mail at cdevany@ppiw.com, letting him know how he can help you (no charge).
