One of the most powerful forces on Earth is consumers making buying choices. They have shaped the world in untold ways for thousands of years and Danny Quintana, founder of the Global High Seas Marine Preserve, is putting that to work by launching GHSMP's 50 Sustainable Seafood Cities Campaign on Friday, October 14 at the Cathedral Church of St. Marks in Salt Lake City with a lively event, Saving the Oceans One City at a Time, that will include a panel discussion and lectures by environmental experts, civic leaders and concerned citizens. The nationwide campaign, targeting the 50 largest U.S. cities, seeks to educate the public about demanding sustainable seafood products from local merchants and advocates local authorities to mandate their jurisdictions Sustainable Seafood Cities (SSC).
With an eye towards the ultimate goal of establishing THE Global High Seas Marine Preserve, which would ban industrial fishing in international waters, Quintana believes the first shot across the bow, so to speak, is for consumers to force changes in the fishing industry by not buying endangered or industrially procured seafood. After all, nothing changes the behavior of economic entities faster than an inability to sell their wares
"It's not their fault, but most people just don't how the oceans are getting hammered, industrial fishing is stripping the oceans clean, tuna is under threat and sharks are cruelly slaughtered daily. Let me tell you, and I've experienced this first-hand, when people really understand what is going on they get scared and then angry. Our 50 sustainable seafood cities campaign will get the message out and hopefully get the public involved in the fight, something must be done before it is too late and the oceans die," says Danny Quintana.
The Global High Seas Marine Preserve came out of the publication of Quintana's latest book, Space & Ocean Exploration: The Alternative to the Military-Industrial Complex, which puts forth a case for diverting U.S. Defense Dept. funds for ocean and space research in such a way as to not cause economic dislocation by pulling jobs from defense contractors. Should the Global High Seas Marine Preserve be established the United States Navy would play the lead role in enforcing the industrial fishing ban and looking for illegal poaching of endangered species by small operators.
