The caregiving topic for this week's program is Advocating for Elderly in Nursing Homes: Tips for Recognizing and Preventing Elder Abuse and Neglect. Elders admitted to nursing homes benefit from a high degree of family oversights and visits. Pamela will share tips for family caregivers to recognize elder abuse and neglect.
Guest Jim Berklan Executive Editor of McKnight's Long-Term Care, McKnight's Assisted Living magazine, and mcknights.com will share information about Medicare's New Program to Pay Nursing Homes for Patient Care called PDPM. Under Jim's direction, McKnight's has received more than 100 national journalism awards. He is a specialist in the field of senior housing and care.
A caregiving advocate with over 20 years of experience, Wilson served as a guardian, medical power of attorney, a care manager for many elderly and disabled clients. According to Wilson,
"The nursing home care system is complex and not understood by family caregivers or elders. With regulations and payment systems changing, advocating for elders in nursing homes is even more essential. When family caregivers take an active role in understanding medical treatment provided in nursing homes and the aspects of discharge, they can limit surprises when elderly parents are discharged and may still need care."
Wilson confirms that she often received phone calls from despondent caregivers on Friday afternoons at 3 p.m., saying, "mom or dad is being discharged from a hospital or nursing home now, and we don't know what to do." Caregivers rely on the healthcare system to provide medical care.
Stress results in failing to think about or plan for what happens after discharge when an elderly parent is sent home and has not returned to the prior level of independence. Most elderly adults want to stay at home and need the support of adult children caregivers to make this a reality
By being proactive in advocating for elders in nursing homes, family caregivers can be more prepared about the level of aftercare and support needed by elderly parents. Avoiding elder abuse and neglect is more likely when caregivers understand the areas in which neglect occurs and how to work with nursing home staff to resolve the concerns.
The February 5th edition of The Caring Generation gives caregivers positive suggestions for advocating for elders in nursing homes and recognizing elder abuse and neglect. All of The Caring Generation radio shows offer tips and solutions to help caregivers and aging adults manage and feel more in control of caregiving relationships and situations.
