In a tweet earlier today, metaverse trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis revealed that World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., more commonly referred to as "THE WWE," has filed several new trademark applications to register WWE LOCKUP, LOCKUP, WWE MOONSAULT, and MOONSAULT for a variety of crypto and virtual goods and services, including:
• NFTs
• Crypto collectibles
• NFT + crypto exchanges
• Online stores for virtual goods
The applications were submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on March 10th and 11th.
"The WWE is a leading sports entertainment brand, and the value attached to it is significant," Mr. Kondoudis says."These filings represent the next logical step to protect that brand as it moves into the Metaverse.
"Clearly, the WWE sees the potential of the Metaverse and is preparing for the virtual economy that will dominate it," Mr. Kondoudis opined.
"We expect the number of trademark filings for NFT and virtual products and services from the sports and entertainment services sector to increase in the next 12 months as brands come to appreciate the need for protection in the Metaverse," Mr. Kondoudis concluded.
Michael Kondoudis is a Washington DC-based trademark lawyer who tracks Metaverse and NFT trademark filings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
