Quarantine, Empty Stadiums Best for Tokyo Olympics: ATRadio
Atlanta) - Empty venues and quarantines for athletes could be ahead for the Tokyo Olympics, a leading epidemiologist in the U.S. tells Around the Rings.
Speaking in the latest ATRadio podcast, Dr Jeffrey Engel says he believes the Olympics and Paralympics can take place next year -- but that extraordinary steps could be needed to protect athletes and spectators.
Engel, senior advisor on Covid-19 for the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, a U.S. professional association, spoke with ATR Editor Ed Hula on May 6.
He says one way to lower risk to athletes would be to have them all arrive at the same time and undergo a two-week quarantine together in Japan ahead of the Games.
In the absence of a vaccine, Engel says another way to protect athletes would be for competitions to proceed without spectators.
Sports events organizers such as the Olympics and professional leagues such as MLB may have to decide if the event is economically feasible without ticket sales, he says.
ATRadio is Around the Rings' market-leading podcast, airing two to three times each week.
"These podcasts bring together the leading figures in Olympic and world sport to discuss the complex issues they face." ATR editor Ed Hula says. "In particular, the impact of the coronavirus and the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics have left sport with many critical issues to settle."
More than 3.7 million cases in nearly 200 countries have been recorded since the coronavirus was first reported on December 2019. Worldwide there have been 260,000 deaths and 1.2 million recoveries.
Friday's ATRadio guest is IIHF Pres. Rene Fasel, speaking with ATR correspondent Brian Pinelli on the day the ice hockey world championships were supposed to begin in Switzerland.
Monday's guest will be Raffaele Chiulli, president of SportAccord, the annual world sport and business summit. Chiulli discusses plans for next year's session in Yekaterinburg, Russia, following the cancellation of the 2020 meeting.
Other recent guests discussing Tokyo 2020 and the coronavirus have included pole vault legend Sergey Bubka, now president of the Ukraine NOC; Sebastian Coe, head of World Athletics and former chairman of London 2012; Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya; Ursula Papandrea, acting head of the International Weightlifting Federation; U.S. Olympic and Paralympic CEO Sarah Hirshland; Dave Hagerty, president of the International Tennis Federation, and Kim Andersen, president of the World Sailing.
A complete directory of recent podcasts can be found here.

Former New York investigative reporter writes a stunning memoir
Eight-time Emmy and Murrow award-winning investigative reporter Matthew Schwartz, who worked on WOR-TV and WWOR-TV, Channel 9 in New York and Secaucus, NJ from 1983-2003, tells stories he couldn't tell on TV in his upcoming memoir, Confessions of an Investigative Reporter, to be released May 26 from Koehler Books. It is now available for pre-orders on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
The book details how Schwartz was told to lie on the air after he interviewed the "Son of Sam" serial killer David Berkowitz. Schwartz writes about his experiences with Donald Trump, covering John Gotti, 9/11 and other New York stories. Confessions of an Investigative Reporter takes an unprecedented behind the scenes look at local news in the New York market and others he worked in during his four decades on TV.
Best-selling New York Times author and former Today show national correspondent Bob Dotson calls Confessions of an Investigative Reporter "fascinating" and "incredible." New York and Los Angeles TV news producer Michael Horowicz says it is, "thrilling and poignant," adding, "I read it in one sitting"
Confessions of an Investigative Reporter is outrageous, funny, dishy and poignant. It's a no-holds barred look at Schwartz' battles with management, police and politicians. It's not only for news viewers. It's for everyone who cares about their community, corruption and justice.

Organized Barter Exchanges Provide a Welcome New Income Source and Cost Reduction Strategy for Small & Large Businesses

PRESS RELEASE Organized Barter Exchanges Provide a Welcome New Income Source and Cost Reduction Strategy for Small & Large Businesses
PORTSMOUTH, VA - April 7, 2020 - (Newswire.com) During these trying financial times business owners are searching for new income sources and cost reduction strategies, and are finding that organized barter exchanges deliver both.
One-on-one barter has been around for centuries. Organized barter exchanges take trading to a more high-tech level with Internet marketplaces and advanced software systems that allow member businesses to trade on a third-party basis where the exchange acts as a trade broker for its members. Member businesses receive trade dollars, (equal to the U.S. dollar in value), when they sell their products or services. Members who have earned trade dollars from sales can use their trade dollars to purchase from any member in the exchange.
Whether good or bad economies, most all businesses have unused capacity or surplus product – barter exchanges turn that spare capacity into new customers and increased revenue. Exchange members trade with other exchange members for what they need and put their checkbook aside. Exchange purchases are an excellent way for business owners to reduce their cash outlay for operating costs. For example, a landscaper can use their earned trade dollars to have their website re-designed, purchase business equipment, utilize electricians/plumbers, provide employee dental & vision benefits, or donate trade dollars to charities – all without spending cash. Exchange members also frequently buy advertising campaigns on trade to help bring in new cash customers.
"The well-established, IRS approved organized barter industry has hundreds of trade exchanges across the U.S. and internationally. They are tailor-made business networks that business owners can instantly tap into for new barter sales and purchases – without having to spend their precious cash. Trade exchanges are an incredibly helpful business tool that virtually every business should have in its arsenal," says Ron, Whitney, President/CEO of the International Reciprocal Trade Association, (IRTA), www.irta.com, a 41-year-old trade association for the global barter industry.
IRTA's barter exchange members come from twenty countries. All IRTA member barter exchanges adhere to a Code of Ethics & Conduct that affirms their compliance with the best practices in the industry. American Retirement Apocalypse Accounts Drop a Whopping 19%!
The U.S. economy has been severely impacted by the coronavirus, and Americans' retirement savings have not been immune.
According to a report by Fox Business last week, Fidelity Investments released the results of its analysis of retirement savings trends for the first quarter of 2020. The financial services company analyzed more than 30 million 401(k), IRA and 403(b) retirement accounts, according to the report that concluded the coronavirus-led economic downturn did indeed lead Americans' retirement savings to drop. According to the report, the average 401(k) account balance had $91,400 during the first quarter, while the average IRA had $98,900 and the average 403(b) had $75,700.
For the average 401(k), that was a drop of 19 percent from the record high of $112,300 last quarter. Meanwhile, the average IRA balance dropped 14 percent from last quarter and the average 403(b) balance dropped by 19 percent from last quarter.
Helping us sort out this "retirement apocalypse" is economist Jack Hanney of Patriot Gold Group.

Navigating Disruption: Five Hallmarks of Leadership
As businesses navigate extreme disruption, the leader must steer their organizations through a myriad of immediate challenges. However, a small number of leaders concurrently bring an additive lens to immediate management activity. These leaders distinguish themselves in five ways.
1. They pay attention to their own internal state and how it influences their behavior. They are therefore able to respond rather than merely react in times of challenge.
2. They observe how others are working together and they influence them to collaborate and galvanize around a common purpose.
3. They keep an eye on the bigger picture whilst managing the immediate crisis.
4. They invest in building their own and others' energy, setting their teams up succeed in the marathon rather than the sprint.
5. They eliminate what is of limited value and they innovate for bigger gains, creating possibilities others only dream of.
How much extra time does this orientation take? Surprisingly, only about 5%. What a huge return for a small investment.

James D. Feldman, CSP, Publishes Shift Happens!® No Job.no Money. 'Now What' Reinvent Yourself Using 3D Thinking
SHIFT HAPPENS!® NO JOB.NO MONEY. NOW WHAT" REINVENT YOURSELF USING 3D THINKING™
Chicago, il in his latest book, james demonstrates to the reader that a creative solution might take the form of redirecting their excess capacity or processes to support the most profitable products or services. thus, innovation is an innovative solution that anyone can use to discover new opportunities. shift happens to all of us. change happens, and we must take control of our lives rather than let our 'shifts' take us over. the challenge of life is to debunk our misconceptions and address our realities. the only question is, how does everyone in business handle the shift.
• Do you or your organization need to discover new solutions?
• Do you or your organization need to overcome challenges?
• Could you or your organization benefit with new, improved, innovative thinking skills?
• Do you or your organization need proven processes and systems that stimulate better ideas in less time?
• Do you need better tools to discover new opportunities using existing resources, annihilate the competition, deliver new products and services, plan meetings and events, save time and money?

Reclaiming Diversity Management: A D&I Reboot
Despite the rash of new appointments to the role of Chief Diversity Officer in all kinds of institutions, many offices of D&I are considered marginal, nonessential, or lip service. Organizations seldom can sustain efforts like that even during normal times. In times of crisis or disruption, it is even more of a challenge. So how can we avoid the decline of D&I efforts during times of crisis and dislocation? Here are some ideas that may help.
Upgrade or Reboot
If your D&I efforts were adding tangible value to the enterprise before the crisis, it would be criminal to lose that value after the crisis. It may be an opportunity to upgrade your efforts to make D&I a more central part of your strategy execution. On the other hand, if you cannot claim any added value from your current D&I efforts, the crisis may provide you a chance to rethink your D&I approach and reboot (or eliminate) D&I as part of your business process. Rethinking begins with asking "Why" (what business problem are we trying to solve with our D&I efforts?)
