The website PostOfficeOpen.com has been updated for 2020. The site answers this question, 365 times a year: Is the post office open today?
"I designed PostOfficeOpen.com to be both simple and useful, immediately offering a yes-or-no answer in bold green or red text," said Kevin Savetz, the site's creator. "It will also let you know if the post office is open 'tomorrow.'"
The handy site is intended to help avoid frustration and wasted trips for those times when it's not immediately clear that a branch of the U.S. Postal Service is closed for a holiday. In some cases, the post office isn't closed on the actual calendar date of a holiday. For example, in 2020, July 4 falls on a Saturday and post offices will be closed in recognition on that day, whereas if the holiday were on a Sunday, the closure date would shift to Monday.
The U.S. Post Office closes all its branches in recognition of federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday, Washington's Birthday (President's Day), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. So, in 2020, mail won't be delivered on Sundays, nor the following dates: Jan. 1, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, May 25, July 4, Sept. 7, Oct. 12, Nov. 11, Nov. 26 and Dec. 25.
An exception is that very rural post offices may keep unusual hours. Also, some branches routinely close on Saturdays.
"If you've ever paused, packages in hand, wondering if the post office is open on a day such as Christmas Eve, Dec. 31 or President's Day, PostOfficeOpen.com is for you," Savetz said.
