A kid in Jersey Mikes (sandwich shop) is at the meat slicer chewing gum with an open mouth over the food. He doesn’t know what I’m ordering. He’s new, hasn’t been trained in (or can’t remember) how to cut food to go in a salad, not a sandwich, and talks only in monosyllables. He’s not friendly, says “Huh?” when he doesn’t hear something, and simply says “Yeah” or “Here.” A colleague has to shut off the slicer which the kid leaves on when it’s not in use, which is dangerous.
Please don’t tell me this is because help is hard to find. The other employees in the store are just fine, as is the help in most other fast food places. There’s a difference between filling an opening and finding an employee who can perform (or be trained to perform).
