Terrorism, once a distant concept for many, has become an ever-present concern around the world.

The Growing Threat of Terrorism

According to an FBI 2023 report, the U.S. faces an increasing number of domestic terrorism cases, with over 800 active investigations. This represents a 20% increase from 2022, reflecting the evolving nature of terrorism, including threats from both international groups and domestic extremists. Additionally, a 2023 report from the Global Terrorism Index highlighted that while global terrorism-related deaths have decreased, the U.S. has seen a rise in smaller-scale, homegrown plots, emphasizing the need for vigilance at the local level.

See Something, Say Something

We can actively contribute to our safety by remaining vigilant and proactive in our communities. Here are three critical steps every American should take to help prevent terror attacks:

  1. Awareness is the first line of defense. If you notice an unusual increase in law enforcement activity or people fleeing an area, do not hesitate to move away to a safe distance and assess the situation.
  1. Unattended items such as packages, gym bags, or suitcases can be potential threats. If you see something unattended, avoid it and immediately notify the police.
  1. Many terror attacks have been stopped because someone reported suspicious behavior. Speaking up is crucial, whether it’s a neighbor acting strangely, unusual social media posts, or a stranger leaving a package unattended. A study published in 2024 by the Department of Homeland Security found that 40% of thwarted terror plots in the U.S. were due to tips from the public, underscoring the importance of community vigilance.

Stay Calm and Stay Informed

Keep Calm and Carry On, Calm

The phrase Keep Calm and Carry On, popularized by the British government during World War II, remains relevant today. In an era where terror attacks can happen without warning, it’s essential to stay calm and informed. Living in constant fear only serves the interests of terrorists. Instead, we can live proactively—aware of the risks but prepared to act if necessary.
