In a tweet earlier today, metaverse trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis revealed that Paris Saint-Germain Football has filed a new trademark application to register the name PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN for NFT and Metaverse products and services. The application was filed on March 16, 2022, and covers:
• downloadable audio and video recordings featuring sports highlights authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs);
• downloadable multimedia file containing text, audio, and video relating to sports highlights authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs);
• non-fungible token-based goods, namely, clothing, bags, toys, sport articles, sport garments, sport shoes, hats, caps, headphones, telephones, watches, balls and soccer balls, spectacles for use offline and/or in online virtual worlds;
• downloadable computer software for managing cryptocurrency transactions using blockchain technology;
• cryptocurrency hardware wallets;
• downloadable software for generating cryptographic keys for receiving and spending cryptocurrency;
• downloadable image files containing trading cards authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs); and
• downloadable image files containing artwork authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
"Paris Saint-Germain is one of the world's best-known football clubs, and the value attached to the team's name and brand is substantial," Mr. Kondoudis said. "This filing represents the next logical step to protect the brand as it moves into the Metaverse.
"Clearly, PSG sees the potential of the Metaverse and is preparing its trademark for the virtual economy that will dominate it," Mr. Kondoudis opined.
Mr. Kondoudis added that this filing "follows the trend by other professional sports brands to begin preparations to participate in the Metaverse."
"We expect the number of trademark filings from the professional sports sector for NFT and virtual products and services to increase over the next twelve months as brands come to appreciate the need for protections in the Metaverse," Mr. Kondoudis concluded.
