D.C. Carjackings Fall After Multiyear Surge?

U.S. Attorney for D.C. Matthew Graves announced at a press conference last week that carjackings in the District were down 78 percent in June when compared with the number in June of 2023, falling by 109 from 140 to 31. Year-to-date, there was a 46-percent drop, with over 200 fewer carjackings through June of this year versus last year. Most of those arrested were under 18 years old.? \

Johnston Pleads Guilty to Blocking Capitol Police
Actor Jay Johnston, who appeared in the 2004 film “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and voiced Jimmy Pesto Sr. in “Bob’s Burgers” from 2011 to 2021, pled guilty last week to a felony charge of obstructing officers during a civil disorder — namely, the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Johnston, 55, who lives in Los Angeles, faces a maximum five years in prison.

Washington Heat Wave: Not a Sports Team
As of July 8, the District has endured three 98-degree days so far this summer. With the heat index applied, the temperature in the capital felt more like 105. As of the most recent 98-degree day at press time, July 8, the city’s temperature had broken 90 on 18 of the prior 22 days. It has been a relatively dry summer, too. Total precipitation has amounted to just under 1.5 inches, about a quarter of the average.?

Starbucks Returning to Union Station
Starbucks is planning to build out a store at D.C.’s Union Station, two years after its popular gateside location shuttered, reportedly due to safety concerns. The ubiquitous coffee shop is targeting a September opening. Union Station retail was hit hard during the pandemic, with about half the indoor storefronts vacant by 2022. Since that year’s lowest point, foot traffic is up more than 94 percent.?

Refurbished Post Pub Runs Dry?

After closing in the summer of 2020 due to the pandemic, the Post Pub at 1422 L St. NW — a dive long favored by D.C.’s ink-stained wretches — was brought back to life by New York restaurateur Jeremy Wladis. Sic transit, the freshened-up bar and grill closed permanently on June 28. With the rise of remote work, the lunch business was little to none, according to Wladis, who also cited an inflexible landlord.
