Former eBay President Jeff Skoll, a billionaire philanthropist, recently bought a compound in Northern Virginia (McLean to be exact) for $17 million. The purchase includes nine acres, including a newly constructed mansion built by Artisan Builders and worth $10.5 million.

The home is 11,600 square feet and includes five bedrooms, and an open and modern design that’s Scandinavian-inspired. Skoll is hoping to live in the home while the second home on the property (the buy includes two parcels of land), a historic estate, is restored.

The property includes a residence built in 1905, log cabin and stables that are said to have been a Civil War era hospital and encampment.

Skoll told The Wall Street Journal that “the last thing he wanted to do was tear down all that history and put in some modern thing that wouldn’t really fit with the vibe of the place.”

The historic estate was formerly owned by Roger Mudd, a TV newscaster (primarily for The History Channel), who passed away in 2021.

Two years ago, Skoll became part-owner of the Washington Capitals. He bought the McLean properties from McFadden Partners to be closer to Capital One Arena. Those interested can read more about the purchase here.
