Where to Celebrate International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day, which is Saturday, March 8 this year, has been observed since the early 1900s. The day is held within Women’s History Month, which began in 1978 in California when a Women’s History Week was planned by the Sonoma Country Commission’s Education Task Force.

March 7

She Comes First
7-10 p.m., Penn Social, 801 E St. NW

Enjoy the fifth annual celebration of Women’s History Month, where women storytellers tell their tales live for one night only. Enjoy a lineup of stories about love, ambition, friendship, motherhood and more. More information can be found here.

March 8

International Women’s Day Yoga
9-10 a.m., National Museum of Women in the Arts, 1250 New York Ave. NW

Enjoy a mindful, gentle yoga session in the museum’s Great Hall. The class will feature slow standing poses and supine and seated positions as well. It’s also BYOYM—Bring Your Own Yoga Mat. Reservations are required, and you can sign up here.

 

March 8

Women’s History Month Celebration
11:30 a.m.-4 p.m., National Portrait Gallery, 8th and G Streets NW

Celebrate Women’s History Month at the National Portrait Gallery. There will be meditations, story times, recipe swaps, art activities, and guided tours with museum curators. The event is for all ages and free, but registration is encouraged. You can register here.

 

March 8

Paper Rocket Craft
4-5 p.m., Southwest Neighborhood Library, 900 Wesley Pl. SW

Kids ages 2+ are invited to make a paper rocket craft and learn about women in space. More information on the event can be found here.

 

Throughout March

King & Rye’s Women’s History Month Secret Menu
King & Rye, 480 King St., Alexandria, VA

King & Rye restaurant has partnered with workforce development program hon’s honey, who is dedicated to empowering women survivors of trauma and championing and spotlighting trailblazing women both past and present. They are offering a special menu throughout the month with a secret cocktail menu.
