With the ascent of devices like the iPad, most casual game web sites are left behind. They require a browser plug-ins and often mouse or keyboard input. So CleverMedia, one of the original pioneers of web-based games, has launched a new game site that works on almost any device.

GamesWithoutLimits.com uses pure HTML5 instead of relying on browser plug-ins. Yet the games are the type usually only thought possible with a plug-in. They include high resolution graphics, animation, arcade action and even sound.

"We wanted a game site that worked across all platforms," said CleverMedia CEO Gary Rosenzweig. "All of those Flash game sites won't work on the iPad and most touch-screen phones."

The games combine HTML5 elements like JavaScript, CSS, graphics and audio as well as some server-side elements. The screens present themselves in different sizes and formats depending on the device: PC or Mac, iPad, iPhone or Android phones. But all games work on all of those platforms.

The site is launching with 12 games, but more will be coming shortly, said Rosenzweig.

"We haven't just developed individual games here," he said. "We've created a platform where we can keep adding new games."

The site also features a high score system that uses Facebook user IDs rather than its own user database. As a result, players do no need to sign up with GamesWithoutLimits.com to begin playing or to register high scores. There is also an achievements system that gives players goals to accomplish with each game.

Like CleverMedia's other game sites, the games are all free to play.
