At first glance it might look like Anthony Weiner and LeBron James have little in common. Look again. The embattled former congressman and the embattled former beloved icon, have several things in common:
1. their ego
Both of these were brash young men with unlimited potential. One wanted to be mayor or president, whichever came first. The other wanted an NBA ring or billionaire status, whichever came first. The problem began when they wanted the riches before they had put in the nose to the grindstone work.
2. their inability to shut up
Both of them needed to stop talking, way before they stopped talking. Their egos did not allow their mouth or their heart to get it. LeBron continued in the last post game press conference to become even more reviled after the game as a loser, than he was before the series ended. Both Colbert and Betty White went on to call him out for his insensitivity. Weiner could have resigned without a press conference. He apparently could not resist one more opportunity to be embarrassed with a press conference that turned into an R rated circus.
3. their inability to take responsibility
In his Cleveland days LeBron blamed Cleveland. He blamed the fans for being spoiled, called out his former teammates for not being good enough, coaches, the city, the owner. When he lost in Miami in what will be one of the most studied-analyzed-dissected under-performances in the history of sports, he did not take any responsibility for the loss.
What led to his resignation was Weiner's refusal to accept his part in the publication of his parts.
4. lack of support
Being from New York can be a good thing, and being brash can be a good thing. Elected official after elected official has said that one of Weiner's main downfalls was that he had no one to stick up for him. He was so busy thumping his own chest that he did not build relationships with other elected officials. Not even his own staff hence the highest turnover amid congress.
Few have come to LeBron's defense. When you tattoo The Chosen One on your back and go on national TV to divorce your team, not too many people are going to verbalize support. The most support he got was the he is a very good BB player support. Says nothing about the human being.
5. good women at home
Both Weiner and James seem to have a very good woman at home. Perhaps that says more than their "on court play" about who they are at their core. Let's hope they take good care of their women because that parting could really hurt their play, just ask TIGER.
