KROTONSKY RECIPIENT OF AWARD FROM SMARTCEO MAGAZINE

Steve Krotonsky, chief operating officer at Goodwill Industries International, was recently honored with the SmartCXO award by SmartCEO Magazine, a leading publication in the Washington metropolitan area aimed at educating, motivating and inspiring regional decision-makers.

The award highlights DC-area chief executives who have consistently gone above and beyond to support and fulfill their organizations' initiatives. This year also marks the first-ever Smart CXO Awards program from SmartCEO Magazine created to recognize leading chief executives within growing companies across the Washington, DC metropolitan region and greater Mid-Atlantic area. The award winners — executives from all C-level categories, including CIO/CTO, CFO, and COO — were recognized at an awards gala event at FedEx Field.

As COO, Krotonsky oversees how Goodwill® functions as an entrepreneurial leader, environmental pioneer and social innovator. Krotonsky was a natural choice as winner in the COO category because of his leadership, including improving and enhancing Goodwill's environmental impact, research and development, donated goods/retail program, AbilityOne contracts, recycling initiatives, grants and funding sources, and business and vendor partnerships.

Krotonsky's biggest success in 2010 was helping grow Goodwill as a sustainable social enterprise, with 26 percent growth in the number of people served and 11 percent growth in retail revenue. Goodwill serves people, including anyone having a hard time finding employment, in communities across the United States and Canada through skills training, job placement, and support services including transportation, childcare, youth mentoring and other support services.

As a member of the Goodwill leadership team, Krotonsky oversaw 25 government grants in the amount of $70 million, which influenced 90 Goodwill member agencies in 2010. As a result, government grants, the bulk of Goodwill's grant revenues, were up 10.4 percent. In addition, he was integral to the growth of AbilityOne jobs, the largest source of employment for people with disabilities, by providing quality products and services for the federal government and increasing AbilityOne revenue by 10 percent.

Krotonsky is also the executive team liaison to the Goodwill Industries International Board Strategic Issues Planning Committee and played a key management role in designing and deploying the process that produced the strategic plan. As part of his going green initiatives, he implemented a two-year agreement with Constellation NewEnergy, a subsidiary of Constellation Energy, to supply Goodwill with renewable energy certificates sourced from wind resources to offset 100 percent of its energy use.

"I am honored and humbled to receive the SmartCXO award," said Steve Krotonsky, chief operating officer for Goodwill Industries International. "Goodwill's growth in the number of people served through employment and its increase in collective revenue figures are outstanding at a time when our society is facing economic challenges. As a social services enterprise, Goodwill Industries International continually strives as a results-orientated organization."
