Hot Pizza ? Warm Home

Norwich, CT ? August 2008 ? The national recession has ushered in tough decisions to be made. Many Americans short on disposable income have had to scale back on extras, sadder yet some have to choose whether to eat or to heat. It?s already clear that a record number of low-income households desperately need assistance, and that thousands of people who earn too much to get government aid will have to use credit cards or borrow in other ways to pay for heat, adding salt to the already wounded economy.

Engine No. 6 Pizza Co. has joined with Operation Fuel to assist community residents in need. Bouley stated, ?We are planning on donating $1 for every small pizza, $2 for every large pizza and $3 for every jumbo pizza we sell every Tuesday until Christmas for our fuel assistance program. We want to benefit our community.? Bouley?s goal is to raise funds to safely heat several homes for the holiday period. The endeavor began in early Fall as fears escalated about potential fuel costs this year and the need for heating assistance became evident. Bouley worked with along with Janine Saunders of the Norwich department of public utilities to organize the effort. Thus far nearly $1000 has been secured for Operation Fuel, with another month to go.

?Our biggest fear is people would be freezing in the wintertime,? said Erin Clark, community programs director for the nonprofit agency Operation Fuel. ?Most of our clients are not poor enough to receive government aid but, because of a crisis in their lives, cannot make ends meet and are forced to make impossible choices. Trying to survive a Connecticut winter with no heat should not be one of their choices.? Operation Fuel is a private, non-profit organization that provides emergency energy assistance to state residents who do not qualify for, or have exhausted, their government assistance. Operation Fuel uses a network of over 65 community organizations which approve grants to assist in paying the utility bills of households in need.
