"You've Been Fanged!"
Levelland, TX – October 17, 2009 – Marty Boisvert, the proverbial face of Mamma Mia! Pizza Kitchen wanted to do something special for National Pizza Month. How to you combine Texas, pizza & individuality? Our 'neighbors' in Sweetwater, TX host the world's largest rattlesnake round-up, we know pizza, thus the Rattlesnake Pizza.
In the southwest, rattlesnake meat is a delicacy. Rattlesnake tastes like a Cornish game hen, with a hint of gamey flavor. It even has a similar texture, but it is a little chewier and a bit stringy. Boisevert brought his team together to develop a Texan recipe for this gourmet pizza. "We thought that since rattlesnake "tastes like chicken," we would start as a variation on our BBQ Chicken Pizza. Also, we took into consideration other ingredients already on hand. What could be more Texan than BBQ, red onions, chicken fajita cubes and jalapenos for flavor and color?" added Boisvert
October is national pizza month, a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions pizza has made to our economy and lives. "We want this to be a fun pizza to really commemorate this month", says Boisvert. The pizzeria offers their delicacy Rattlesnake pizza along with an "I Ate the Snake" T-shirt for $39.95. Boisvert doesn't assume sensational sales of the Rattlesnake pizza because of the nature of the product and the price, but he does anticipate people will talk about it.
Levelland is home to a junior college, and many students drive over from Lubbock, the home of Texas Tech. Folks seem to be a bit timid to give it a try. Those that do try, like the 'bite'. Local businessman, Allen Whitley remarked, "That was some good BBQ, I won't ever think of a rattler in the same way."
